Veterans Program

At Yass Valley Council we recognise the unique skills and attributes demonstrated by Defence service personnel in their service to our country.

These same skills and attributes are valued in serving our local community.

Council strongly encourages ex-service personnel to look at the many and varied opportunities available.

Council appreciates that applying for roles outside of Defence can be daunting. If the candidate is unsure of where to start, or would like some support with the application process, please contact the HR Team via email HR@yass.nsw.gov.au

Why choose a job in Local Government?

Transferable skills

Ex-service personnel’s time in the military has equipped them with the necessary skills required to succeed in Local Government. Ex-service personnel have a unique and extensive skills portfolio; leadership, teamwork, initiative, accountability, and communication are just some of the skills that are transferable into Local Government.

Ex-service personnel’s ability to see and understand the big picture clearly makes them highly employable. However, if the candidate doesn’t know what their own skills are and how they can transfer to Local Government, they are going to limit their chances of gaining employment.

Ex-service personnel’s ability to communicate their skills and attributes to an interview panel is paramount; the NSW Local Government Rank 2 Grade Guide and Local Government Capability Framework are two resource tools that were designed to assist both ex-service personnel and hiring managers to understand what transferrable skills are.

Diverse job opportunities

Ex-Service personnel may be quite surprised when they realise the similarities between Local Government and Defence.

The scale and diversity of the work Local Government is required to conduct, means that there are many different career pathways available within the organisation. Like Defence, Local Government's primary role is to serve its community, to be able to achieve this, Local Government requires a diverse and multi skilled workforce, who are upbeat, resourceful and determined.

Professional Development

Ex-service personnel looking to upskill or gain a new Tertiary qualification can find out more on the Veteran’s Employment website.

Do you know?

Local Government rank to grade guide and capability framework

The Local Government Rank to Grade Guide was developed to help both hiring managers and veterans understand how Australian Defence Force (ADF) skills and experience align with public sector jobs. The candidate can use this guide as a tool to help identify where their skills and qualifications align to.

The Local Government Capability Framework sets out the essential knowledge, skills and abilities needed to work effectively in Local Government. The guide outlines the requirements of Council roles and how veterans military experience can fulfil these needs at all employment levels.

Veteran Employee Program

The Veteran Employment Program (VEP) is and initiative by the NSW Government Office of Veterans’ Affair. The VEP is a communication and education platform that supports both veterans and hiring managers.

VEP continues to build a network of champions and partners to help promote the skills veterans can bring to Local Government.
