1. Apply Online
Apply online on the Yass Valley Council Website or Seek by uploading a current copy of your resume and addressing the essential criteria questions and pre-employment check questions. Applications close at 11:59pm on the closing date.

It is important that candidates take the time to read the position description carefully and can demonstrate that their experience and skills match the requirements for the position. The position description can be downloaded from Council’s website on the job advertisement.

The online job application should provide information about the candidates professional and educational background to demonstrate that they meet the requirements for the position.

The candidate must provide contact details for at least two recent or current work-related referees.

2. Shortlisting
After the job advertisement has closed the candidates are shortlisted. The selection panel will assess candidate job applications against the selection criteria to decide who will progress through to an interview. 

3. Interviews
If the candidate is selected for interview, Council will advise the candidate of the date, time and location of the interview. Please advise Council of any special requirements (e.g., accessible parking space, wheelchair access) for appropriate arrangements to be made.

Council’s selection panel will include a convenor, a subject matter expert, and other staff members to recommend the most suitable person for the position.

Interview questions are based on the selection criteria of the position description. During the interview, the selection panel will seek to identify the candidate’s suitability for the position.

Through the interview process, additional selection activities may be utilised. For example, a work sample test, writing, mathematics, typing et cetera, depending on the requirements of the role. If additional selection activities are to be used, candidates will be advised and additional information will be provided.  

4. Reference Checks

Council will contact the preferred candidate to seek their permission prior to contacting their referees.

5. Offer of Employment

The preferred candidate will be offered an Employment Contract. The offer of employment is conditional on the following:

  • having and maintaining the lawful authority to work in Australia.
  • providing Yass Valley Council with identity documentation that can be verified.
  • completing an integrity check/criminal history check which will be undertaken by Council with the candidate’s consent. The outcome of the check must be returned prior to commencing employment or the start date will be delayed.
  • obtaining and maintaining any qualifications, registration and licences required for the position.

6. Pre- Employment Checks
Candidates that are made an offer of employment will be required to complete the standard pre-employment checks and additional pre-employment checks for specified positions as per the below. Council may withdraw any offer of employment or terminate employment if a candidate provides false or misleading information.

Identity Check – 100 points of Identification

Prior to commencement the preferred candidate, is required to provide original identity documents (100 points of ID) for verification. For further information about what will need to be provided refer to the Yass Valley Council 100-point checklist for Identification documents here(PDF, 118KB).

Integrity Check - Criminal History Check (Council will pay for the check).

Prior to commencement the preferred candidate will be required to undertake a criminal history check (also known as a National Police Check) via an online portal.

They will receive an email with instructions to login or register for an online account in the portal. For further information about what will need to be provided refer to the Fit2Work Proof of Identity Requirements here (link to instruction document).

Important: The Integrity Check / Criminal History check is a priority, it needs to be completed as soon as possible, as the outcome of the check must be returned prior to commencing employment or the start date will be delayed.

Right to Work Check (If not provided as part of Identity Check) – Visa information for Visa holders.  Prior to commencement if the preferred candidate is a visa holder, they are required to provide details that can be verified in VEVO (Visa Entitlement Verification Online) that verifies the right to work in Australia.
