Councillor Al Charry is a retired Army Officer with 27 years of full-time service and extensive combat experience in the Middle East and Timor Leste. Al has served in Mentoring Task Force One in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan, which was recognised in the 2011 Queen’s Birthday Honours with the Meritorious Unit Citation. Al is also a recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal for his time with U.S. Army Pacific in 2018-2019.
He holds a Master of Military and Defence Studies from the Australian National University and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Canberra. A graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Australian Command and Staff College, and the Asia-Pacific Centre for Security Studies (U.S.), Al is the Managing Director of SAC Consulting Australia, a firm specialising in workplace culture and HR consulting.
Al is passionate about supporting the Yass Valley community, particularly through his volunteer work with RSL NSW, the Murrumbateman Community Association and other local charities. Al prioritises strong representation of the Yass Valley community in the chambers, with a dedicated focus on supporting and advocating for the growth of local tourism and small businesses to enhance the region’s vibrancy and economic resilience.
A Murrumbateman local, he lives there with his wife Dr Skye Charry, and their children Summer and Samuel.
