Boil Water Alert for Yass, Murrumbateman, Binalong and Bowning  Remains in Place

As of 10.00pm Wednesday, February 14, a Boil Water Alert was issued to the residents of Yass, Murrumbateman, Binalong and Bowning.

Exceeding turbidity means an ineffective disinfection of drinking water. Turbidity is a measure of how cloudy or murky water is. It is caused by suspended particles such as silt, clay, or organic matter that scatters, making the water appear cloudy.

As the Boil Water Alert is still in place, residents need to remember that water used for drinking or food preparation should be brought to a rolling boil to make it safe. Kettles with automatic shut off switches can do this. Water should be allowed to cool and stored in a clean container with a lid and refrigerated.

Boiled water or cool boiled water should be used for drinking, washing uncooked food (e.g., salad vegetables and fruit), making ice, cleaning teeth, gargling and pet drinking water.

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) NSW staff are on site and supporting Council staff to sufficiently disinfect the water.

Pools within the region have been closed and will continue to do so until the alert has been lowered. Pools are topped up daily using the water source. The pool must be cycled 7 times using clean water before it is safe to invite participants back into the water.

Council will continue to work with NSW Health until they approve the next process of flushing the system, in accordance with guidelines to allow the Boil Water Alert to be lifted.

Council will advise residents, businesses, and media as soon as the approval for lifting the Boil Water Alert is received and will continue to provide updates on the situation when they become available.
